What travelers are saying
"The hike to La Mina waterfall was stunning. Our guide pointed out coqui frogs, parrots and a tiny boa. The waterfall pool is cold but worth every step. Best half day from San Juan."
"Ziplining through the El Yunque canopy was incredible. Six lines, hanging bridges and views over the rainforest canopy. The guides were patient with our kids and safety was top notch."
"El Yunque hike in the morning then bio bay kayak at night was the best day of our Puerto Rico trip. The glowing water in Laguna Grande felt like magic. Long day but unforgettable."
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. It covers 28,000 acres in northeast Puerto Rico with hundreds of waterfalls, the endemic coqui frog, Puerto Rican parrots and trails for every fitness level. Easy day trip from San Juan with hotel pickup.
A guided El Yunque half day tour costs $50 to $80 USD with hotel pickup from San Juan. Zipline adventures run $90 to $130. Combo tours with Fajardo bio bay start at $150. Self-drive park entry to El Portal visitor center is free, La Mina parking reservation costs $2.
La Mina Trail (0.7 miles each way) and Big Tree Trail (0.85 miles each way) are the easiest with the biggest reward, both ending at La Mina Falls. Mount Britton (0.8 miles uphill) is harder but has the best canopy views. Yokahu Tower needs no hiking, just a short stair climb.
Visit between December and April for the driest weather and clearest views. Mornings before 11 am beat the afternoon rain. El Yunque is open year round and rain showers are part of the rainforest experience, so bring a poncho and waterproof shoes any month.
Bring sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes, a swimsuit under your clothes for waterfall pools, a quick dry towel, reef safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a light rain jacket. Most operators provide trekking poles, drinks and snacks. Leave large cameras in the car.
Stay in San Juan if you want city life, restaurants and one or two day trips to El Yunque (45 minutes drive). Stay in Rio Grande or Luquillo if El Yunque is your main focus, you want to be inside or next to the rainforest, and you plan to combine with the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo.
Book at least one week ahead in high season (December to April and July to August). Bio bay kayak combos sell out faster (2 to 3 weeks ahead) because Laguna Grande limits nightly entries. La Mina parking permits also need a separate reservation. Instant confirmation on all bookings.
Yes. Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before departure are non-refundable. Check the specific tour for details.
